The University of Minho held a Workshop on September 28th, 2023, as part of the European Project PARTICIPATION. The workshop focused on the theme “The Role of Regional and Local Authorities in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism.”
P/CVE policies began to emerge in the wake of the events of 2001. While some countries already had well-established prevention frameworks, many recognized their necessity in the years following 2004 and 2005, and, particularly, after the wave of attacks in Europe in 2015. There is a growing consensus within the international community that local officials and practitioners can play a crucial role in addressing the underlying conditions that facilitate violent extremism. Consequently, an increasing number of regions and cities are devising strategies and launching initiatives aimed at combating radicalization and violent extremism.
The workshop showcased the findings of the comparative case study conducted by the project, examining the P/CVE efforts underway in various European cities.
